Chapter 6
Suspension and Alignment
If your vehicle bounces
around a lot while driving, sags in the front or rear, or the front
end dips down excessively when braking, then you may need to have your shocks
or struts replaced. If your vehicle is sagging or swerving or even bottoming out then
you should have your suspension checked.
Keeping your vehicle in proper alignment is another important maintenance
item. Alignment is the state in which all wheels on your vehicle are pointed in
the optimum direction relative to each other and the road. If your vehicle's
alignment is out you may notice signs of uneven tire wear, a shimmy in the
steering wheel, a tendency for your vehicle to shoot off in another direction
after hitting a bump, a squealing tire on turns, a tendency for the vehicle to
pull to one side, or even the vehicle's steering wheel not pointing straight
ahead when the vehicle is going straight
Many of the specialty shop chains sell shocks and struts and these chain
stores are generally well equipped to handle alignment. Shocks and struts are
generally best purchased at specialty shop chains because of their ability to
offer discount prices due to large volume. However, if you have a newer vehicle,
check your warranty first. If the problem is still under warranty make certain
the specialty shop chain is set up to do warranty work or else go back to the
dealer.
