Chapter 2
Generic Maintenance Schedule and General
Overview
Properly maintaining your vehicle will greatly increase its life and
performance. Everyone is familiar with the saying "you can pay now or pay
later". Well, these are words to live by when dealing with a mechanical device
as complicated as an automobile. Never ignore a problem because a small problem
will ultimately turn into a much bigger one. For example, not changing the oil
on time can lead to costly engine repairs later. Your vehicle should have come
with an owner's manual with maintenance information and schedules specific to
your vehicle. However, as a general guide, below is a generic maintenance
schedule.
1. Every couple of weeks it's a good idea to check all of your vehicle's
fluid levels including engine oil, water/antifreeze, wiper fluid, brake fluid,
transmission fluid, and power steering fluid. Many of the speedy oil change
places will generally perform these services for you, but be sure to ask about
them.
2. Every 3,000 miles change the engine oil and filter and lubricate the
chassis. Also inspect the air filter and change as necessary. If you are driving
in dusty conditions then the air filter will likely need changing every 3,000
miles as well. Your dealer, a general repair facility, or a speedy oil change
place can certainly handle these maintenance items for you. Be sure to ask for
all these services, as they generally do not cost extra. If the car is not
driven often (i.e., a station car) make certain the oil is changed at least once
a year.
3. Once a month you should check the condition of the belts, shocks, tires,
wiper blades, hoses, and all lights. Also check the battery for corrosion on the
terminals, condition of the cables, and water level where applicable.
4. Every six months or 6,000 miles check the brake system.
5. Every 15,000 miles inspect the automatic transmission and change the
fluid. Most speedy oil change places will provide this service for you as will
your dealer or general repair facility.
6. Every 25,000 miles change the fuel filter and spark plugs. Also, inspect
the spark plug wires and change if worn. Check the engine timing at this time
and adjust as necessary. Most general repair facilities can do this for you or
have your dealer perform the work.
With respect to all of the above services, you have to find a repair facility
or facilities you feel comfortable with and trust. Make certain, for any
warranty work you always return to a dealer or a shop licensed to do warranty
work. See discussion of warranties in Chapter 22. We think it is a good idea to
get to know the service people wherever you go. Location and convenience are
other factors when choosing a repair facility. For example, will they allow you
to drop off the vehicle in the morning and give you a ride to work.
Lastly, always be sure to get an estimate. Not getting an estimate is
like giving the repairer a blank check.
