Chapter 10
Timing Belts
The timing belt is a component that synchronizes your engine's
crankshaft to the cam shaft which controls the timing of the opening and closing
of your engine's valves. Without the timing belt your engine will not run at
all. Note that some engines have timing-chains and others have what is referred
to as gear-driven timing, which means there is no belt or chain. Timing-chain or
gear-driven timing systems sometimes need servicing, but it is a timing belt
that is sure to require replacement.
Timing belts will definitely wear out the question is when. Check your
vehicle's owner's manual to see at what mileage the manufacturer suggests
changing the timing belt and stick to their schedule. If your timing belt breaks
while you are driving, the engine will stop working. That's actually the good
news, because the bad news is that on certain makes and models when a timing
belt breaks internal engine damage can occur. The bottom line is, check when the
manufacturer suggests changing the timing belt and just get it done on time.
